"State of California Environmental Issues," the 11th annual Lecture on Energy and the Environment sponsored by the Energy and Resources Group (ERG) at the University of California, Berkeley.

WHEN
6 p.m. Friday, April 2

WHO
Terry Tamminen, secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA), is the guest lecturer.

DETAILS
Tamminen was appointed secretary of the Cal/EPA by Gov. Schwarzenegger on Nov. 12, 2003. A native of Australia, Tamminen operated various businesses before founding Santa Monica BayKeeper in 1993. The citizens' organization is dedicated to surveying the environmental health of Santa Monica Bay, San Pedro Bay, and adjacent coastal waters and watersheds; alerting the public to potential hazards; and exposing those who degrade the ecosystem. He served as the organization's executive director for six years and co-founded Waterkeeper programs in San Diego, Orange County, Ventura and Santa Barbara. Tamminen currently serves on the board of the National Waterkeeper Alliance, and from 1999-2003 was executive director in Santa Monica of Environment Now, a foundation dedicated to the restoration and protection of California's environment and natural resources.

Cal/EPA, created in 1991, is a cabinet level voice for the protection of human health and the environment. Its mission is to restore, protect and enhance the environment, and to ensure public health, environmental quality and economic vitality.

UC Berkeley's ERG is an interdisciplinary academic unit conducting programs of graduate teaching and research that address issues of energy, resources, development, human and biological diversity, environmental justice, governance, global climate change and new approaches to thinking about economics and consumption. Established in 1973, the ERG offers two-year M.A. and M.S. degrees in energy and resources, as well as Ph.Ds. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Class of 1935 and the Energy Foundation.

Due to limited seating, reporters should call Donna Bridges at the ERG to reserve a seat: (510) 642-1760 or dbridges@socrates.berkeley.edu.
