Memorial Services Sunday for Reginald Zelnik

WHAT
University of California, Berkeley, officials will hold a memorial service Sunday (Aug. 29) for Professor Reginald Zelnik, a distinguished scholar in Russian and Soviet history who died last spring.

Zelnik, a member of the UC Berkeley faculty since 1964, died May 17 when a delivery truck accidentally backed into him as he was walking on campus. He was 68.

The memorial service, which is open to the public, will begin at 11 a.m. on the campus's Faculty Glade. It is sponsored by the campus's Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies, of which Zelnik was affiliated, in coordination with the university's Department of History.

Participants will include Martin Jay, chair of the Department of History; Zelnik's brother Martin Zelnik; Zelnik's daughter Pamela; his colleagues and friends from across the UC Berkeley campus; as well as colleagues from various colleges and universities including Yale University, Stanford University, Southern Methodist University, New York University, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Zelnik mentored countless young Russian history scholars during his tenure at UC Berkeley, courageously defended students during the tumultuous Free Speech Movement, and wrote influential books on Russian labor history. Read more about him online at:
