The 40th anniversary of the Free Speech Movement at the University of California, Berkeley, is being commemorated with a number of events the week of Oct. 4-10. Events are being planned by the campus, the Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) and Free Speech Movement veterans.
On Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. in Zellerbach Hall, the 2004 Mario Savio Memorial Lecture will feature syndicated columnist and author Molly Ivins. Ivins will discuss U.S. politics with Orville Schell, dean of the Graduate School of Journalism. Free tickets will be available on Lower Sproul Plaza on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 5 p.m. the day of the event.
The major celebration of the week is planned for Friday, Oct. 8, at noon on Sproul Plaza. It will feature a number of speakers, including Howard Dean, former governor of Vermont. The celebration is a combined effort of the ASUC and Free Speech Movement veterans. Other speakers will include ASUC President Misha Leybovich, Chancellor Robert Birgeneau, and state Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg, who was a Free Speech Movement leader. The noon celebration will be followed by several teach-ins focusing on current civil liberties issues. They will run from 1:30-4 p.m. in and around Sproul Hall.
