WHAT
Cal Corps Public Service Center's first Alternative Weekend project, a student-run and student-led program. In partnership with local groups, 10 University of California, Berkeley, students will stay in San Francisco's Tenderloin District and work on an environmental justice service project in the Bayview District.
Alternative Weekend is part of Cal Corps' Alternative Breaks Program, when students forgo traditional vacations and instead take part in community service projects involving hands-on learning. Cal Corps provides various opportunities for students to participate in and partner with community groups to create educational programs for students, promote leadership through service and foster social justice and civic engagement.
WHEN
The program begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at St. Boniface Church at 133 Golden Gate Ave. and continues through the weekend.
WHERE
Various locations in the Tenderloin and Bayview districts:
Friday, Oct. 22
6 p.m.- Speakers and group discussion about environmental justice takes place at St. Boniface Church.
Saturday, Oct. 23
9 a.m.- noon: In the Bayview District, students meet Ben Francisco from Literacy for Environmental Justice and participate in a wetlands restoration project at Heron's Head Park, formerly known at Pier 98, a 24-acre site at the base of the Hunters Point Power Plant.
1 p.m.- 4 p.m.: Marie Harrison from Green Action will lead the group on a "toxic tour" of the neighborhood. Students will seek out residents to discuss conditions there.
