Black students stage campus "blackout"
17 November 2004
BERKELEY – Close to 200 black UC Berkeley
students linked arms to form a human barrier under the university's Sather
Gate this afternoon, protesting their underrepresentation among the student
body. Dressed entirely in black, with black scarves over their mouths,
the students stood grim-faced and silent in the sun while other participants
handed out flyers explaining the "blackout" to passersby.
The
Sather Gate demonstration from 12 to 2 p.m. followed visits by the silent
protesters to several classrooms. There will be a public meeting this evening (Wednesday, Nov.
17) at 7 p.m. in Evans Hall, room 60, to discuss the students' grievances.
