WHAT
"Resilient Rebels," a symposium that will bring together scholars, poets and activists in tribute to Emma Goldman and other guardians of freedom in the face of political adversity. UC Berkeley's dean of International and Area Studies (IAS), John Lie, will host the event to honor the new affiliation between the university's Emma Goldman Papers Project and IAS's Peace and Conflict Studies program.

Participants will include Robert Hass, UC Berkeley professor of English, former U.S. poet-laureate; Leon Litwack, UC Berkeley history professor and long-time principal investigator with the Emma Goldman Papers; Judith Butler, UC Berkeley, professor of Rhetoric, feminist political theorist; Clayborne Carson, Stanford University history professor, scholar of Martin Luther King Jr. and director of Stanford's King Papers Project.

Emma Goldman (1869-1940) was a Russian-born anarchist and lifelong advocate of women's rights, freedom of expression and social justice.
The Emma Goldman Papers Project is a collaborative documentary-editing project that bridges history, labor studies, politics, rhetoric, sociology, literature and gender studies and crosses cultural and national boundaries. The archive houses more than 40,000 documents.
