Memorial service to be held Saturday for UC Berkeley professor Martin Malia
BERKELEY – A memorial service will take place on Saturday (Dec. 11) for Martin Edward Malia, a University of California, Berkeley, professor emeritus and a leading specialist on Russia who died last month.
The memorial mass will start at 10:30 a.m. at Newman Hall-Holy Spirit Parish, 2700 Dwight Way in Berkeley. A reception will follow.
Malia, who lived in Albany, died at an Oakland convalescent hospital on Nov. 19 after suffering from pneumonia and a series of infections.
The professor joined UC Berkeley's history department faculty in 1958 and retired in 1991, but continued to write during his retirement and to enjoy public recognition among scholars for his body of research.
