WHAT
"Launching a Movement: Linking Our Efforts to Make a Difference," the 2005 California Childhood Obesity Conference, addressing the state's epidemic of childhood obesity with special emphasis on low-income families. The four-day conference is hosted by the California Department of Health Services Primary Care and Family Health Division, the University of California, Berkeley's Center for Weight and Health, and the California Department of Education.

Keynote speakers are Gerard Hastings, professor of social marketing at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland and special advisor to the United Kingdom House of Commons Select Committee on Health; Dr. Robert Ross, president and CEO for the California Endowment; and Marion Nestle, professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University.

DETAILS
The childhood obesity conference draws more than 1,200 participants, from educators and public health professionals to civic and business leaders. This conference on childhood obesity is considered the largest such gathering in the country.

The conference is also supported by Kaiser Permanente, the California Endowment, Blue Cross of California, L.A. Care Health Plan, Dairy Council of California, and California State Parks, FITWIZE 4 KIDS, Inc., Peaceful Playgrounds, Inc., University of California, Davis's Communications Services, and the San Diego chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
