Memorial service this Friday for Martin Landau

BERKELEY – The University of California, Berkeley, will hold a memorial service this Friday (March 4) for Martin Landau, a political science professor and expert on applying the concepts of redundancy from the design of information systems to the study of public organizations.

Landau, 83, died of cancer on Dec. 27 in Berkeley.

The service will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Seaborg Room of the Faculty Club. It is being held by the campus's Institute of Governmental Studies, Department of Political Science, and Goldman School of Public Policy. It is open to the public.

The institute recently announced that in honor of Landau's memory its Center on Organizational & Social Change will be renamed the Martin Landau Center on Organizational & Social Change.

Landau joined the UC Berkeley faculty in 1971 and retired two decades later. In addition to his work using redundancy concepts, he was known for his contributions to the philosophy of social science and the theory of public management and large-scale organization. He founded the campus's Hong Kong Project, which trained senior level public managers from Hong Kong to apply concepts of organizational theory to practical administrative decision making and problem solving. Landau also served as a consultant in organizational design in the United States, Thailand, the Philippines, Nepal, Italy, France and elsewhere.
