Cal Day coming on April 16

– The University of California, Berkeley, invites you to Cal Day on Saturday, April 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. This annual open house is for the general public, including prospective students and their families.

Amidst a fair-like atmosphere, there is something for everyone: campus tours, music and food, sporting events, special free museum tours and information on the latest in campus research. Children - and kids at heart - will particularly love the three-story Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, the CALnival game area, and hands-on displays in physics, archaeology, engineering, and other departments. Almost everything is free.

In honor of Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau's inauguration on Friday, April 15, the Chancellor will speak on Cal Day and there will be special Cal Day presentations highlighting the recent work of UC Berkeley's faculty. Among the topics for the chancellor's inauguration symposia are battling SARS, flu and AIDS; undergraduate research; election analysis; women and work; and Socratic dialogue.

The only thing in short supply will be parking, and we recommend visitors take public transportation via BART or AC Transit buses. Shuttle buses will run between campus and the downtown Berkeley BART station, and motorized cable cars will shuttle visitors around campus.

For more information, the public can call (510) 642-2294. A full schedule of activities will be online after April 1 at http://www.berkeley.edu/calday/.
