WHAT
The 12th annual YWCA "Shadow Day" at the University of California, Berkeley. Approximately 200 Oakland, Richmond, Emeryville and El Cerrito high school students will be paired up with UC Berkeley students and "shadow" them through a day in college.
WHEN
Thursday, April 7, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
WHERE
Various locations on and near campus, including classes, libraries, residence halls and Greek houses.
DETAILS
The annual event provides these high school students, many of whom are from underrepresented communities, with an up-close and personal view of college life. Among the high schools participating are Oakland Technical, McClymonds, Castlemont, Oakland Unity, Oakland, Emery, Kappa and East Bay Conservation Corps Charter School.
Marsha Rhynes, a teacher at McClymonds High School who attended Shadow Day last year and will go again this year, praised the program: "The students get to envision themselves as students at UC Berkeley, which they couldn't otherwise do. They get to see and feel and touch all the realities of going to college."
From 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m., the students will gather at the YWCA to hear from administrators from UC Berkeley and regional colleges about the admissions process, transfer policies, scholarship and financial aid programs, and other issues.
The event is also sponsored by the UC Berkeley's Office of the Chancellor, College of Letters & Science, Residence Hall Assembly and 22 UC Berkeley student volunteers.
