Experts gather for conference on democracy and global Islam

WHAT
"Democracy and Global Islam," a conference at the University of California, Berkeley, that will address the impact of globalization on the practices of the Muslims and on the Islamic doctrine. Academics, government officials, and other members of the political community also will discuss the relations between Islam and democracy, and Islam and conflict.

The event is being held by UC Berkeley's Institute of Governmental Studies, along with various other campus departments and units.

WHO
Panelists will include:

- Olivier Roy, research associate, humanities and social sciences, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris, and consultant with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs whose publications include "The Failure of Political Islam" and "Global Islam"

- Nadia Yassine, spokesperson, al-Adl wal-Ihsan (Justice and Charity) Islamist Movement in Morocco

- Justo Lacunza Balda, Catholic priest, head of the Pontifical Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, Rome, Italy, and expert on Christian-Muslim relations

- Ahmed Alibasic, deputy president of the Society of Ulama of Bosnia-Herzogovina

- Saba Mahmood, anthropology professor, UC Berkeley

- Gunter Mulack, ambassador at the German Foreign Office in Berlin and the Minister's Commissioner for Germany's Dialogue with the Islamic World

- Marc Sageman, adjunct professor of psychology, Solomon Asch Center for Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict, University of Pennsylvania, and author of "Understanding Terror Networks."
