DETAILS
Samples of the works to be read include this excerpt from the 1859 issue of The Hesperian, a newspaper founded by two women to counter other publications that they said disparaged Western women as too forthright and assertive:
"Notwithstanding all that has been said and written of California, people at a distance appear to have a very imperfect idea of our position, either socially or morally ... They do not stop to consider that in California are gathered together great minds from all parts of the world ... which shall in time be developed to startle the world."
