New students welcomed at Convocation, Welcome Week

WHAT
The University of California, Berkeley's 2005 Fall Convocation, honoring all new students. Speakers will include Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau and Manuel Buenrostro, the new president of the Berkeley division of Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC).

Convocation is part of Welcome Week, Aug. 22-26, when new students can attend more than 200 workshops, orientations, tours and receptions offered by some 100 campus departments. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 29.

UC Berkeley will have 33,050 students enrolled this fall, including 4,030 new freshman, 1,981 new transfer students and 2,750 new graduate students.

Fall convocation is Monday, Aug. 22, from 4-6 p.m.

DETAILS
Daily activities will include morning jogs, hikes to the Big "C," seminars on Internet and computer use, student panels and campus tours. New this year are more evening activities for all students, including a casino night, carnival, movies and a poker charity event. And for two nights only, Tuesday and Thursday, see the sunset view from atop the Campanile, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Calapalooza

An activity and resource fair for UC Berkeley students.

Caltopia
Friday and Saturday, Aug. 26-27, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Recreational Sports Facility
