Orville Schell, dean of the campus's Graduate School of Journalism, will lead the chancellor in a conversation addressing Birgeneau's priorities for UC Berkeley and the major initiatives he has set in motion since taking the helm last year. Likely topics of conversation include Birgeneau's efforts to increase diversity on campus, boost undergraduate financial aid and marshal the campus's resources to conduct multidisciplinary stem-cell research. In addition, Birgeneau will discuss plans to launch a new capital campaign and to revitalize the southeast quadrant area of the campus.
Robert Birgeneau became the ninth chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, on Sept. 22, 2004. An internationally distinguished physicist, he is a leader in higher education and is well known for his commitment to diversity and equity in the academic community.
"Berkeley's role as a model public university is so important that we must summon ourselves to its highest aspirations," Birgeneau has said. "Any failure to lead as a pre-eminent research and teaching university not only diminishes Berkeley but also diminishes the standards to which public education in this nation aspires."
