Symposium to explore relationships between drawing by hand and by computer

BERKELEY – Has computer-aided design rendered the pencil and pen obsolete? Or is drawing by hand critical to certain ways of thinking, perceiving and understanding? These and other related issues will be addressed in a two-day symposium, "Thinking/Drawing: Drawing in an Electronic Age," set for March 3-4 at the University of California, Berkeley.

The program sponsored by UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design will explore the need and role for drawing in the design professions and fine arts at a time when the computer dominates the production of images.

Marc Treib, a UC Berkeley architecture professor, is organizing the conference, which will feature presentations on research and other work by a dozen professionals in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, painting, art history and animation.

The program will be held 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday, March 3, and Saturday, March 4, in Room 112 of Wurster Hall, near the intersection of Bancroft Way and College Avenue.
