New organic dining option a first for U.S. campuses

WHAT
The unveiling at the University of California, Berkeley, of the nation's first certified organic food service at a college or institution. At the campus's Crossroads dining commons, UC Berkeley students, back on campus next week following spring break, will discover a transformed salad bar with only organic veggies, dressings and more. By spring 2007, all four of UC Berkeley's dining halls managed by Cal Dining will offer certified organic salad bars.

WHEN
10:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., Monday, April 3. Students eat lunch throughout this stretch of time.

WHERE
Crossroads, the largest of the student dining facilities at UC Berkeley. It is located at 2415 Bowditch St. in Berkeley. The nearest cross street is Channing Way.

WHO
Available for interviews will be Chuck Davies, executive chef; Kim LaPean, marketing coordinator for UC Berkeley's residential dining service; and Jake Lewin, director of marketing and international programs for CCOF, the country's oldest and largest organic certifier.

DETAILS
The organic salad bar area and dining area will be accessible to the media from 10:30 to 2 p.m. The kitchen will be accessible from 2 to 3 p.m. Representatives from several organic food suppliers will also be on hand at the opening.

In 2004, Crossroads became the first campus facility certified as a Bay Area Green Business by Alameda County officials.
