Science of spiritual transformation focus of 3-day meeting

WHAT
"Spiritual Transformation: New Frontiers in Scientific Research," a meeting at the University of California, Berkeley, of more than 50 scientists, medical researchers and theologians who will present results of recent studies in the phenomena of spiritual transformation.

WHEN
April 5, 6 and 7. Sessions start at 8:45 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, and at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Sessions end at 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, at 6 p.m. on Thursday and at 5 p.m. on Friday.

DETAILS
Results of 22 studies on the nature of the biological, psychosocial and cultural conditions and factors that underlie spiritual transformations of individuals and groups will be presented at the symposium.

Highlights will include recent research on the effects of spiritual transformation in patients with cancer and with AIDS, and on religion and spirituality among adolescents and college students. There also will be discussion about a recently-released survey on spiritual transformation conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago.

The symposium is being presented by the Metanexus Institute on Religion and Science, which is in Philadelphia, and by UC Berkeley's Center for Health Research and School of Public Health.
