WHERE

DETAILS
Chamberlain and fellow UC Berkeley physicist Emilio Segrč, both researchers at the former Radiation Laboratory that is now Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1959 for their discovery of the antiproton, the antimatter equivalent and negatively-charged mirror image of the proton.

Chamberlain also was known as an inspiring teacher, a humanist and a social activist. He participated in Free Speech Movement demonstrations and antiwar protests and lobbied the U.S. administration to achieve a nuclear test ban treaty. He helped found and was a director for four years of the Ploughshare Fund, a public foundation dedicated to nuclear peace.

Details on the memorial, as well as a photo gallery and an obituary, can be found online at: http://inpa.lbl.gov/chamberlain/OCmemorial_main.htm.

The family has asked those wishing to make memorial donations to contribute to one of the following: UC Berkeley's physics department, for student support (send checks to The Owen Chamberlain Memorial Fund c/o Claudia Lopez, 366 LeConte Hall # 7300, UC Berkeley, Berkeley, CA 94720); or The Ploughshares Fund (Ploughshares Fund, Fort Mason Center, Bldg. B, Suite 330, San Francisco, CA 94123).
