WHAT
The University of California, Berkeley's 2006 Commencement Convocation, a ceremony to honor all graduating students. Fabian Núñez, speaker of the California Assembly, will deliver the keynote address. Lane Rettig, a senior receiving the 2006 University Medal, will speak about technology, social responsibility and being a global citizen.
Convocation includes a procession of students and faculty members in colorful regalia, the presentation of awards, and speeches. Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau will give a welcome.
WHEN
4 p.m., Wednesday, May 10. Gates open at 3 p.m. The event is scheduled to conclude before 6 p.m.
WHERE
The Greek Theatre, UC Berkeley. The amphitheater, which seats about 6,000, is on Gayley Road, near Memorial Stadium, on the north side of campus.
WHO
Núñez, the son of Mexican immigrants, emerged on the California political scene in 1994 when he led an attempt to defeat Prop. 187, an initiative to bar undocumented immigrants from public schools and restrict their medical care to emergency services. Núñez, (D-Los Angeles) was elected to the state Assembly in 2002.

DETAILS
The event is not open to the public. Tickets are reserved for graduating seniors and their guests. Print and broadcast reporters are invited to cover convocation, and seats have been set aside for them. A limited number of parking spaces for credentialed media is being set aside at the Bowles parking lot adjacent to the theater. The media entrance to the theater is the South Gate.
