Professor emeritus Irving Kaplansky dies at 89
BERKELEY – Irving Kaplansky, a University of California, Berkeley, professor emeritus of mathematics, former director of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in the city of Berkeley and an authority on algebra, died in his sleep at his home in Sherman Oaks, Calif., on June 25. He was 89.
Kaplansky came to UC Berkeley in 1984 and retired three years later. He served as director of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute from 1984 to 1992.
