WHAT
A news conference to announce a major gift to the University of California, Berkeley's C.V. Starr East Asian Library and Chang-Lin Tien Center for East Asian Studies. The gift will provide essential funding to complete construction of the four-story complex.

The center will bring together UC Berkeley's vast East Asian resources and programs, which now are scattered across campus. It is expected to open in fall 2007.

WHEN
11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 19

WHERE
Morrison Library, just inside the north entrance to Doe Library, in the center of campus and just south of the new center under construction

WHO

  • UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau
  • UC Berkeley East Asian Library Director Peter Zhou
  • Florence Fang of Hillsborough, Calif., chair and co-founder of Asian Week newspaper and former publisher of the San Francisco Examiner

DETAILS
UC Berkeley started construction of the C.V. Starr East Asian Library and Chang-Lin Tien Center for East Asian Studies a year ago. Once completed, it will be the first freestanding building ever constructed in the United States to house an East Asian library. Florence Fang is a strong supporter of this project. UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library recently celebrated the gift of the Fang Family San Francisco Examiner Archives, the single largest gift ever to The Bancroft.
