Le Grande named interim head of student affairs
BERKELEY – Harry Le Grande has been named UC Berkeley's interim vice chancellor for student affairs, effective Jan. 1. He will lead efforts to provide student- and faculty-support service programs relating to academic development, retention, admissions and financial aid, multicultural diversity, campus outreach, student conduct, residential living, and other student-related matters.
A staff member at Berkeley since 1981, Le Grande has taken on successively more responsible positions in student affairs, and has served as associate vice chancellor of student affairs for residential and student service programs since 2004. An internationally recognized leader in the college and university student housing field, Le Grande is also active in local and national civic organizations, including the National Forum for Black Public Administrators, which has recognized him with a Meritorious Service Award. He holds a bachelor's degree in social ecology, with emphasis in mental health, from UC Irvine, and a master's of education, with emphasis in college student services administration, from Oregon State University.
Le Grande succeeds Genaro Padilla, who steps down at the end of this year, after more than 10 years as a senior administrator, to return to teaching and research as a professor in the English department.
In a statement this week announcing Le Grande's confirmation by the UC Regents, Chancellor Birgeneau said, "I am confident that he will bring to the leadership of Student Affairs the same passion, integrity and commitment as his predecessor, Genaro Padilla, whose outstanding service to the university was recognized last week through the awarding of a Berkeley Citation, the university's highest recognition."
