UC Berkeley Press Release

Jimmy Carter to speak on campus this Wednesday

– MEMO TO THE MEDIA
ATTENTION: Higher education and political science reporters and editors

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, will discuss his hopes for Israeli-Palestinian peace and his new book "Palestine Peace Not Apartheid" in a lecture at the University of California, Berkeley, this Wednesday, May 2.

The event is being sponsored by the Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC), UC Berkeley's student government, and the Office of the Chancellor. Two UC Berkeley students, acting on their own initiative, invited the former president to come to campus to provide a lecture and meet with students. It is their hope that the visit will promote open dialogue on the issue of Middle East conflict and peace.

The former president has indicated that he is particularly interested in talking to students. The vast majority of the free tickets, 80 percent, were given to UC Berkeley students and sold out last week on the first day they were made public. The remainder will be given to faculty and staff, via lottery, this afternoon. The event will be webcast live via: http://webcast.berkeley.edu/events.

The lecture will take place at 4:30 p.m in Zellerbach Hall. A book signing will take place earlier that day, from 3-4 p.m., in the ASUC Senate Chambers, Eshleman Hall.

Other U.S. presidents who have visited UC Berkeley include Bill Clinton, who gave an address in 2002 on the impacts of globalization; John F. Kennedy, who gave the campus's Charter Day address in Memorial Stadium; and Harry S Truman in 1948, Herbert Hoover in 1926 and 1935, Woodrow Wilson in 1919, William Howard Taft in 1909 and 1915, and Theodore Roosevelt in 1903 and 1911.

There will be no press conference or media availability with Carter, but special press seating is available in Zellerbach Hall for credentialed reporters. Reporters and camera crews must register with UC Berkeley Media Relations by noon tomorrow, Tuesday, May 1, to reserve a seat. Tickets are limited. To register for the event or for more general information about the lecture, contact Janet Gilmore in Media Relations. TV crews and still photographers who have registered in advance for the event and have press credentials must be set up inside Zellerbach by 4:15 and will not be allowed in after that time.
