WHAT
"Implementing Health Reforms in California," this year's topic at the annual symposium of the University of California, Berkeley, Nicholas C. Petris Center on Healthcare Markets and Consumer Welfare.
State and local health officials will update attendees on Gov. Schwarzenegger's Health Care Reform proposal and on the implementation of health care access in San Francisco. In addition, researchers and UC Berkeley staff and faculty will present current progress on The Mental Health Services Act of 2004, and the newest findings on the use of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) medication by children. Presentations are followed by an audience Q&A session.

Keynote speakers are Sandra Shewry, director of the California Department of Health Services, and Tangerine Brigham, director of San Francisco's Health Access Program. Panel speakers include Stephen Mayberg, director of the California Department of Mental Health, and Stephen Hinshaw, chair of UC Berkeley's Department of Psychology. The event will be moderated by Stephen Shortell, dean of UC Berkeley's School of Public Health.
DETAILS
The Petris Center, established in 1999, is part of UC Berkeley's School of Public Health. It focuses on general health research, consumer protection and affordable access to health care. The center also assesses concentration, regulation and competition in the health care markets.
Richard Scheffler, UC Berkeley professor of health economics and public policy, is director of the Petris Center.
