Researchers recommend tougher post-election audits
BERKELEY – Two University of California, Berkeley, researchers are among the four authors of a report released today (Wednesday, Aug. 1) that recommends more targeted and rigorous audits of paper records produced by electronic voting machines.
The report was a collaborative effort between the Samuelson Law, Technology & Public Policy Clinic at UC Berkeley's School of Law (Boalt Hall) and the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law. The UC Berkeley researchers include Joseph Lorenzo Hall, a Ph.D. student at the School of Information; and Aaron Burstein, a research fellow for the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology and for the Samuelson Clinic at the law school.
Hall said the report, with contributions from a blue ribbon panel of voting experts, leading election officials, statisticians and computer scientists, could serve as a peer-reviewed reference for election officials to show what works and what doesn't during post-election audits.
"This will be very useful at the national level," he said, adding that some of the report's recommendations could be put into place in time for the 2008 presidential primaries.
