the Iraq war

How is the current Iraq war viewed in Latin America, and how has it affected Latin Americans' perception of the United States?With these questions in mind, the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at UC Berkeley asked five leading public intellectuals — from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico — to share their thoughts, using as a jumping-off point their reactions to a recent award-winning documentary on U.S. policy decisions surrounding the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq.
"The violence unleashed on the people of Iraq has damaged the United States' image in Latin America and across the world. That is obvious," writes Argentine journalist Roberto Guareschi. "Less obvious and more serious is the fact that it has also discredited the image of democracy, which was used as an excuse for war."
Other respondents include Colombian journalist Daniel Coronell, Chilean law professor Javier Couso, Mexican intellectual Sergio Aguayo, and Chilean diplomat Juan Gabriel Valdés, his country's former permanent representative to the United Nations. ¿Que opina Latino América de la actual guerra en Irak, y como a afectado la percepción que tienen los Latino Americanos de los Estados Unidos?
Con estas preguntas en mente, el Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos (CLAS) en la Universidad de California, Berkeley solicito las opiniones de cinco renombrados intelectuales de Argentina, Chile, Colombia, y México para compartir sus reacciones a la reciente documental premiada sobre las decisiones tomadas por los Estados Unidos a Irak.
"La violencia que ahora afecta a la gente de Irak a dañado la imagen de los Estados Unidos frente a Latino América y el mundo entero. Esto es obvio," escribe el periodista Argentino Roberto Guareschi. "Lo que es menos obvio y mas serio es que también se a dañado la imagen de la democracia, que se utilizo como excusa para iniciar la guerra."
