WHAT
Linda Greenhouse, Pulitzer-prize winning journalist and long-time U.S. Supreme Court reporter for The New York Times, will deliver the fall 2008 Jefferson Memorial Lecture at the University of California, Berkeley. The event is being sponsored by the campus's Graduate Division and Graduate Council.
According to Greenhouse, her address, "The Mystery of Guantanamo Bay,'' will explore why, despite a series of losing court battles, the Bush administration has yet to be ordered against its will to release a single detainee from the prison at Guantanamo Bay. The administration has released hundreds of detainees at its own discretion but has never been ordered by the court to release anyone the administration did not want to release - Greenhouse considers that fact to be the mystery of Guantanamo Bay.

WHO
Linda Greenhouse served as The New York Times' Supreme Court correspondent from 1978 to July 2008 and is the author of a biography on Harry Blackmun, "Becoming Justice Blackmun: Harry Blackmun's Supreme Court Journey" (2006). She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Beat Reporting in 1998 for her "consistently illuminating" coverage of the Supreme Court. In January 2009, Greenhouse will join the faculty of Yale Law School as a fellow and distinguished journalist-in-residence; she will teach courses and advise students.
