DETAILS
University of California, Berkeley, Chancellor Robert Birgeneau will discuss the impact of the state budget crisis on UC Berkeley during a media conference call tomorrow (Tuesday, March 10). Nathan Brostrom, the campus's vice chancellor for administration, also will be available during the call.
The media opportunity follows budget communications that Birgeneau and Brostrom released to the campus community this week. In those memos, the administrators outlined UC Berkeley's plans to address a projected $60-$70 million funding shortfall for the 2009-10 fiscal year. Key approaches will include a staff hiring freeze, temporary slowdown in faculty hiring, and expansion of a program that encourages employees to reduce their work hours.
Additional programs are being developed and are included in the administration's March 8 and March 9 memos, which are available on the campus's Budget Central Web site: https://newsarchive.berkeley.edu/news/budget.
