WHAT
"The New Narco-Cultura," a public lecture by award-winning Latin American journalist and essayist Alma Guillermoprieto. She will explore policy decisions that have brought the drug war to the forefront of Mexican politics, as well as cultural responses by Mexican society to drug trafficking and its related violence.
Guillermoprieto will be a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley's Center for Latin American Studies this spring. In addition to her public talk that is sponsored by the center, she will teach a seminar at the center on Central America, Colombia and Venezuela.

WHO
Guillermoprieto was one of two reporters to break the shocking story of the El Salvadoran army's massacre of 900 villagers at El Mozote in 1981. She has covered the Shining Path guerilla organization in Peru, life in Cuba, the aftermath of Argentina's "Dirty War" and post-Sandinista Nicaragua. A native of Mexico City and a former professional dancer, she also has published a book about studying at a samba school in Rio de Janeiro.
Foreign Policy magazine in May 2008 named her one of the 100 most influential public intellectuals in the world.
