ATTENTION: Science, technology and human rights reporters and editors
WHAT
An international conference at the University of California, Berkeley, on how science and technology can and are being used to advance human rights advocacy and research. "The Soul of the New Machine: Human Rights, Technology and New Media Conference" is being hosted by UC Berkeley's Human Rights Center.
Topics will include geographic information systems and satellite imagery; mobile technologies and forensic investigations; and corporate responsibility and complicity.
WHEN
The Clark Kerr Conference Center at Warring and Derby streets, northeast of the main UC Berkeley campus.

Keynote speakers will be:
- James Surowiecki, The New Yorker columnist and author of "The Wisdom of Crowds: Why the Many Are Smarter than the Few and How Collective Wisdom Shapes Business, Economies, Societies and Nations" Surowiecki will speak on Monday from 6-7 p.m. at the Krutch Theater at the Clark Kerr Conference Center.
- Trevor Paglen, author of "Blank Spots on the Map: The Dark Geography of the Pentagon's Secret World."
