18 June 2009
Dear colleagues:
With the University of California facing a severe reduction in state funding, President Mark Yudof has asked that his cover letter and a summary of three options under review for furloughs and/or salary reductions be shared with the campus community. These documents are also linked from the Budget Central website.

President Yudof intends to present a single option to the Board of Regents for approval at the July 2009 meeting. Whatever option is eventually adopted will apply to all employees systemwide, subject to the University meeting any obligations under HEERA (Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act).
At this time, we are inviting campus comments on the draft options. Please respond no later than 5:00 p.m. on June 29, 2009 as follows:
- Non-represented staff and managers should send their comments to hrpolicy@berkeley.edu.
- Senate faculty and non-represented academic appointees should send their comments to appolicy@berkeley.edu.
Supervisors are asked to print and distribute President Yudof’s letter and the proposed Furlough/Salary Reduction Plan Options to employees who do not have access to a computer.
Sincerely,
George W. Breslauer, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
Nathan Brostrom, Vice Chancellor-Administration
