Getting physical

Staying — or getting — in good physical shape can help you on a number of fronts during stressful times. It can enhance your self-esteem, sense of wellbeing, self-control, and determination. And a little bit of activity can go a long way in improving your mood and mental health. 

If you are looking to spend some healthy, mind-clearing time on campus, try these options for faculty and staff:

Walking group: University Health Services offers a year-round walking group that meets for 30-minute sessions on the west side of the Campanile each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 12:10 p.m.

Dancing for Fitness: Faculty and staff can also cut loose in Dancing for Fitness, a drop-in beginners' dance class that meets on the first Friday of every month from 12:10 to 1 p.m. in 251 Hearst Gymnasium. Learn a new dance style — salsa, Brazilian, jazz funk, and more. No partner is required. To enroll for the next session, visit the UCB Learning Center via Blu.

Yoga: Health*Matters offers an introduction to restorative yoga — known as "active relaxation" — on Monday, Aug. 10, 12:10 to 1 p.m., at Hearst Gymnasium. Participants will learn a few simple poses that can be done anywhere to promote deep relaxation, renewed energy, and focus. Massage: The Recreational Sports Facility's new Wellness Center is offering another way to de-stress, a 25-minute therapeutic massage for $25. Possible benefits include decreased anxiety, enhanced sleep, and greater energy and concentration. Register online or call 643-8030.
