UC Berkeley earns top-10 spot in Sierra magazine's 'Cool Schools' environmental ranking

BERKELEY — Going green has made the University of California, Berkeley a "Cool School," according to Sierra, the national magazine of the Sierra Club. The campus's environmental record has earned it a top 10 placement in the magazine's third annual "Cool Schools" ranking, released today (Thursday, Aug. 20).

Scores were calibrated to create an out-of-100 rating system. UC Berkeley earned a score of 96, which placed it in 8th place among 135 colleges and universities nationwide. Schools were judged in eight categories: efficiency, energy, food, academics, purchasing, transportation, waste management and administration. UC Berkeley's best scores were in efficiency, food and transportation.

The announcement marks the latest accolade in recent weeks for UC Berkeley's sustainability efforts. Less than a month ago, the campus made The Princeton Review's "Green Honor Roll" for being one of only 15 colleges in the country to get a top score for environmentally friendly policies.
