WHAT
A memorial gathering at the University of California, Berkeley, to celebrate the life and legacy of Ronald Takaki, professor emeritus of ethnic studies, who died on May 26 at age 70. Takaki was a preeminent scholar of U.S. race relations who taught the University of California system’s first black history course.
WHEN
This Friday, Sept. 18, 1-3 p.m. A reception will follow from 3:30-5 p.m.
WHERE
The memorial will be held at Chevron Auditorium, International House, 2299 Piedmont Avenue (at Bancroft Way), Berkeley. The reception will be in the Ethnic Studies Library, Room 30, Stephens Hall, UC Berkeley. See campus map.
WHO
Speakers at the memorial event will include members of Takaki’s family and of the UC Berkeley Department of Ethnic Studies, as well as popular UC Berkeley history professor emeritus Leon Litwack. There will also be a video remembrance of Takaki. Ukulele music and the hula will be performed in honor of Takaki’s Hawaiian roots.
