WHAT
"What Ails California? The 13th annual Travers Conference on Ethics and Accountability in Government," an expert examination at the University of California, Berkeley, of what ails California, potential cures and whether a constitutional convention can help resolve the state's ills.
WHEN
8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23
WHERE
The Lipman Room, 8th floor of Barrows Hall, UC Berkeley. Barrows Hall is northeast of the intersection of Bancroft Way and Telegraph Avenue. See campus map.
WHO
UC Berkeley's Charles and Louise Travers Department of Political Science and the Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) are hosting the conference. Key participants will include:
- Chancellor Robert Birgeneau, who will deliver the opening remarks
- Jack Citrin, IGS director and a UC Berkeley professor of political science, who will present new research about the evolution of Californians' views of state government and what that it says about the passage of crucial ballot measures as well as the underlying causes of the state's political dysfunction
- Former state legislators Jim Brulte (former state Senate and Assembly Republican leader) and Fabian Núñez (former state Assembly Democratic leader), who will join Susan Rasky, a senior lecturer at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and a veteran political reporter, for a keynote conversation at lunch
- Special panels of experts in public policy and government, as well as representatives of advocacy groups and the general public
