WHAT
A panel discussion on the"Presidency of Barack Obama" at the University of California, Berkeley. The event is being hosted by UC Berkeley's African American Studies department as part of the 40th anniversary of the journal, The Black Scholar. Charles Henry, chair of African American Studies at UC Berkeley, will moderate a panel that will evaluate Obama's first nine months in office, and also review the role and contributions of Michelle Obama.

In addition to Henry, moderators and speakers will include:
- Ula Taylor, associate professor of African American Studies
- Robert Smith, professor of political science at San Francisco State University
- Brenda Payton, journalist and former Oakland Tribune columnist and journalist
- Herbert Boyd, author and journalist
DETAILS
The two-day conference will include a luncheon with remarks by The Black Scholar editors Robert Chrisman and Robert Allen. Chrisman is a poet, essayist, and former head of Black Studies at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. Allen is adjunct professor of African American Studies at UC Berkeley. There will also be a panel discussion on "Contemporary Climate and Trends for Black Scholars in Academia," moderated by Melba Boyd, poet and chair of African American Studies at Wayne State University in Michigan.
