STATEMENT FROM CHANCELLOR CHANG-LIN TIEN ON THE DEATH OF EUGENE E. TREFETHEN, JR.

This is a sad day for all of us at the University of California, Berkeley. We have lost a remarkable friend whose steadfast loyalty, wise counsel, and great generosity will be deeply missed.

Gene Trefethen was dedicated to enhancing the mission of the University and gave freely of his time and resources to that end. He will be remembered for his untiring service to Cal as an outstanding volunteer whose leadership as a member of the UC Berkeley Foundation Board of Trustees, as well as his involvement in countless fundraising campaigns, inspired others to emulate his philanthropic spirit.

Gene received many campus awards in recognition of his devotion to Cal, including Alumnus of the Year in 1979 and the Chancellor's Award in 1981. In 1989, he received the highest honor that the campus can bestow-the Berkeley Medal. Gene was a great man whose contributions to his alma mater will be felt for generations to come.
