WHAT: The University of California at Berkeley opens its doors to the public to enjoy a cornucopia of events, including campus tours on motorized cable cars. Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti will host a poetry reading, Nobel Laureate Charles Townes will speak on the life of a scientist, International House hosts a spring festival celebrating the world's cultures and student groups will provide continuous entertainment. In all, more than 70 departments -- from anthropology to the seismographic station -- have programs and special events planned. WHEN: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 13 WHERE: UC Berkeley campus WHY: Berkeley holds Cal Day once a year to give residents of the Bay Area and California a chance to experience the campus first-hand.
