WHAT: The University of California at Berkeley opens its doors to the public to enjoy a cornucopia of events, including campus tours on motorized cable cars. Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti will host a poetry reading, Nobel Laureate Charles Townes will speak on the life of a scientist, International House hosts a spring festival celebrating the world's cultures and student groups will provide continuous entertainment. In all, more than 70 departments -- from anthropology to the seismographic station -- have programs and special events planned. WHEN: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 13 WHERE: UC Berkeley campus WHY: Berkeley holds Cal Day once a year to give residents of the Bay Area and California a chance to experience the campus first-hand. This year the university will also celebrate its traditional Charter Day in colorful outdoor ceremonies on Cal Day. PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES: Visitors will rappel off the face of Wheeler Hall in a clinic and demonstration run by the ROTC program. 10 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. (This was last year's big hit.) Students and faculty will don colorful academic regalia for the traditional procession opening the 128th Charter Day Anniversary ceremonies, Dwinelle Plaza, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara is the keynote speaker, and the Cal Band performs. Engineering students show off their innovations with solar cars, concrete canoes and a supermileage car on the lawn outside the Bechtel Engineering Center. All day. Children dwarfed by a 30-foot tall Tyrannosaurus Rex invade the Paleontology Museum, Valley Life Sciences Building. All Day.
