ADVISORY--UC Berkeley's Open House, Saturday, April 19

WHAT: Attend one of the Bay Area's biggest parties as the University of California at Berkeley opens its doors to the public to enjoy a day of music, sports, cultural events, lectures and tours. Departing Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien will reflect on his years at Cal at a special lecture, Cal students will match wits with challengers from neighboring schools at the Quiz Bowl Exhibition and the football team will hold an open scrimmage under the direction of new head coach, Tom Holmoe.

WHEN: Saturday, April 19, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHERE: UC Berkeley campus

WHY: Cal Day is an annual campus event that gives residents of the Bay Area and California a chance to experience a day in the life of one of the top research universities in the nation.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Two professors will unveil an alternative design for the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge at 2 p.m. in Sibley Auditorium, located in the Bechtel Engineering Building. A 14-foot-long model will be on display during the discussion.
  • Students and faculty will don colorful regalia for the traditional procession opening the 129th Charter Day Anniversary ceremonies in Dwinelle Plaza from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Departing chancellor Chang-Lin Tien is the keynote speaker and the Cal Band will perform.
  • The proud heritage of indigenous people will be on display at an authentic Pow Wow with traditional song, dance and costumes, 10 a.m. to sundown, lawns at the West Gate.
  • Cal's lovable mascot "Oski" gets an eye exam with Chancellor Tien at 10 am in the University Eye Center, Minor Hall.
  • Continuous outdoor performances by Cal's student vocal groups singing traditional school songs under campus landmark Sather Gate from 1 to 3 p.m.
  • "Bugs-R-Us: Essig Museum Show-Offs," a display of exotic museum specimens.
  • The 23rd Annual Pacific Coast Jazz Festival features student ensembles performing and visitors "movin' to the groove" outdoors in Lower Sproul Plaza throughout the day.
  • Watch visitors make their own earthquakes as they jump up and down at the campus seismograph station, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 565 McCone Hall.
