Berkeley -- Learn about everything from insects to politics and enjoy watching lacrosse or listening to jazz at UC Berkeley's Cal Day open house on Saturday, April 19. The campus opens its classrooms, laboratories, museums and sports fields to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nearly all of the hundreds of activities are free and all the campus's museums -- including the popular Lawrence Hall of Science -- will be open and there will be no admission charge. Limited parking will also be free in campus lots. At 11 a.m., visitors can get a taste of campus history and pageantry by attending the annual Charter Anniversary celebration. This year, Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien will deliver the keynote speech. Across campus, noted faculty will share their wisdom and research in lectures throughout the day. At 10 a.m., Cal Day visitors can learn about the causes of aging and cancer from Professor Bruce Ames, or get the insider's view of politics from Professor Bruce Cain. At 9 a.m., Professor Lisa Pruitt will share her work on developing new materials for total joint replacements, while at 2 p.m. Professor Abolhassan Astaneh will talk about the Bay Area's bridges in the 21st century. Throughout the day, music from Pacific Coast Collegiate Jazz Festival performers will fill lower Sproul Plaza. There will be no shortage of activities of interest to children. They can learn what a paleontologist does and search for their own micro-fossils. Or, they can check out showy and exotic insects from around the world. Sporting events, including a fencing club meet, a tennis match with USC and a lacrosse game, will keep sports fans entertained. Several special programs will be available to welcome newly admitted students and assist prospective ones.
