Steve Wozniak, Jesse Jackson, Leon Panetta, Willie Brown and others to address UC Berkeley grads

BERKELEY -- Apple Computer, Inc., co-founder Steve Wozniak heads a long list of prominent people - including politicians, scholars, writers, business and religious leaders - scheduled to speak this year at commencement celebrations at the University of California, Berkeley.

More than 60 departments, schools and colleges will hold dozens of separate graduation ceremonies between May 9 and May 26. More than 10,000 students are eligible to graduate this year - 7,500 with bachelor's degrees and nearly 2,600 with graduate degrees.

Wozniak, who received a BS in computer science from UC Berkeley in 1986, will deliver the main address on Tuesday, May 12, at the annual Commencement Convocation for all graduates. A limited number of tickets to the 4 p.m. Zellerbach Auditorium event will be available to the public starting today (May 6) at the Cal Performances Box Office.

Also speaking at the convocation, which is organized by the Senior Class Council, will be Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl; top graduating senior Mekhail Anwar, this year's University Medalist; and, on the occasion of the Class of 1948's 50th anniversary, alumna Marian Diamond, director emeritus of the Lawrence Hall of Science and UC Berkeley professor of integrative biology.

Other awards to be presented to students during the ceremony include the Priestley Award for leadership, the Mather Award for citizenship and several athletic awards.

  • David Halberstam, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Graduate School of Journalism, Sat., May 9, 11 a.m., North Gate Hall Courtyard.

  • Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer, Inc., Commencement Convocation, Tues., May 12, 4 p.m., Zellerbach Auditorium.

  • Willie Brown, Mayor of San Francisco, African American Studies department, Sun., May 17, at 1 p.m., Greek Theatre.

  • The Rev. Cecil Williams, pastor at San Francisco's Glide Memorial Church, Undergraduate and Interdisciplinary Studies-2, Thurs., May 21, 2 p.m., Zellerbach Auditorium.

  • Arlie Russell Hochschild, UC Berkeley sociology professor and author of books including "Time Bind: When Work Becomes Home and Home Becomes Work" and "The Second Shift: Working Parents and the Revolution at Home," Sociology Department, Sat., May 23, 10 a.m., Zellerbach Auditorium.

  • The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Goldman School of Public Policy, Sat., May 23, 10 a.m., Faculty Glade.

  • Leon Panetta, former White House chief of staff who, as a congressman from Monterey and Santa Cruz, chaired the House Budget Committee; School of Law (Boalt Hall), Sat., May 23, 3 p.m., Greek Theatre.

  • Maria Echaveste, current director of public liaison for the White House, Chicano/Latino celebration, Sun., May 24, 9 a.m., Greek Theatre.

  • Robert D. Haas, Chairman and CEO of Levi Strauss & Co. and a 1964 graduate of UC Berkeley, Haas School of Business, Mon., May 25, 2 p.m., Greek Theatre.

  • State Senator Bill Lockyer, Political Science department, Tues., May 26, 2 p.m., Greek Theatre.
