NEWS RELEASE, 11/05/98 UC Berkeley Extension appoints new dean; Garry D. Brewer will lead continuing education arm of UC Berkeley

BERKELEY -- Internationally known scholar and environmentalist Garry D. Brewer has been appointed dean of UC Berkeley Extension, the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley. He will also hold a faculty appointment in the Energy and Resources Group (ERG), an interdisciplinary graduate-level department and program on the UC Berkeley campus. Brewer, 57, comes to Berkeley from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he was the first director of the Frederick A. and Barbara M. Erb Environmental Management Institute. From 1992 to 1995, he served as dean of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment. He also held faculty positions in the schools of Business Administration and Natural Resources and Environment during his years there. "I am tremendously excited by Professor Brewer's arrival at University Extension," says UC Berkeley Vice Provost Nicholas P. Jewell. "He possesses the perfect combination of academic credentials and administrative leadership to lead Extension into the 21st century. Further, Garry is a superb addition to our scholarly community on campus. I look forward to the continuing success and expansion of Extension's activities under Garry's direction." Between 1974 and 1991, Brewer was on the faculty at Yale University, where he advanced to holding the Frederick K. Weyerhauser (1984-90) and Edwin W. Davis (1990-91) Chairs. He held simultaneous appointments in two of Yale's professional schools, Organization and Management and Forestry and Environmental Studies, as well as two university departments, Epidemiology & Public Health and Political Science. He also played leadership roles in Yale's Center for International and Area Studies and the Institution for Social and Policy Studies. Brewer is the author, co-author or editor of nine books and more than 195 other professional publications on a wide range of topics, including organizational complexity and behavior, computer applications to social and national security problems, political and economic development, forecasting and strategic planning, environmental management and resource policy issues. From 1992 to 1997, he held a presidential appointment to the United States Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, which provides general oversight and final scientific review for the disposal of the country's high-level nuclear waste. He has also been appointed to Ontario Hydro's Independent Review Panel on Nuclear Waste Strategies and Management and elected a member of The Royal Swedish Academy. This year, in addition to assuming his new position at UC Berkeley, Brewer is serving as The King Carl XVI Gustav Professor of Environmental Sciences at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He holds the position, which was created in honor of the King's 50th birthday, at the invitation of King Carl XVI Gustav. In coming to UC Berkeley, Brewer returns to his alma mater. He received an A.B. in mathematical economics at Cal in 1963. He then went on to complete an M.S. in public administration at San Diego State University in 1966. At Yale University, he attained an M. Phil. (1968) and Ph.D. (1970) in political science. UC Berkeley Extension is one of the oldest and largest continuing education programs in the United States. A self-supporting unit of the university with a $42 million annual budget, UC Berkeley Extension offers more than 3,000 courses each year. In addition to the wide selection of courses held at locations around the Bay Area, UC Extension is a leader in distance learning, with more than 80 online courses available, and it offers extensive international, national and contract training programs. Brewer replaces Mary S. Metz, who recently retired as dean and will begin serving as president of the S.H. Cowell Foundation in San Francisco early next year.
