Bring Canned Food For Loaves and Fishes

To encourage the campus community to help feed the many hungry in our midst, Loaves and Fishes, a local volunteer group, is sponsoring a canned-food drive on campus through Nov. 17 and has placed collection bins in many buildings.

Loaves and Fishes is a ministry of the Catholic Newman Hall, dedicated to serving the needs of the poor and homeless in the Berkeley and Oakland communities. It is run by hundreds of volunteers, many of whom are Berkeley faculty, staff, and students.

All donated food will be given to the Alameda County Food Bank, the Berkeley Food Pantry, the AIDS Food Bank, local shelters, transitional houses, and individual families living in poverty.

"Although none of us can individually resolve the conditions that result in an increasing number of people without food," said Chancellor Tien, "programs such as Loaves and Fishes help to mobilize the community to help families meet the most basic needs.... I am especially proud of UC faculty, staff, and students who give their time to participate in the food drive."
