Plan Now for On-Campus Children's and Youth Activities

In the fall, Berkeleyan and the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Dependent Care asked the campus community to send in information on programs for children that will be offered on campus this summer. Below is a list of those programs, their deadlines and registration information. Thanks to everyone who took the time to submit the information.

Young Musicians Program

Provides musically gifted students from low income families with a comprehensive music education on a full scholarship basis. Successful students from the summer session receive scholarships for private lessons during the academic year.

Dates and Times: June 20-Aug. 6, 7:30 am-5 pm, M-F

Age Range: 11-17 years old

Price/Financial Assistance: Full scholarships

Registration Dates: Applications are available now and due March 7; auditions are April 1-2

Special Requirements: Students must be from low income families

MESA Summer Academy

MESA (Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement) is an academic enrichment program that focuses on math and science.

Dates and Times: June 19-July 28, 9 am-5 pm, M-F

Age Range: Entering 7th grade-12th grade (12-17 years old)

Price/Financial Assistance: $600 for summer program; financial aid is available

Registration Dates: Application packets will be available mid-February

Special Requirements: MESA is intended for historically underrepresented students; however for summer academy, any interested student should apply

UC Berkeley Academic Talent Program

Elementary Division: Each July, students in grades K-6 are invited to a school site near the Berkeley campus for an exciting three-week experience exploring academic areas not normally offered at their regular schools. The program's goal is to select motivated students who desire opportunities for intellectual and social enrichment.

Secondary Division: This program brings young scholars to the Berkeley campus for a six-week session of challenging and stimulating classes, designed for both academic acceleration and enrichment.

Dates and Times: Elementary Division, July 10-July 28; Secondary Division, June 19-July 28

Age Range: Elementary Division, Grades K-6; Secondary Division, Grades 7-12

Price/Financial Assistance: Elementary Division, $330 (excluding materials fee). Secondary Division, $330 for five units, $490 for 10 units (excluding materials fee).

Registration Dates: The deadline to send in a completed application for the Secondary Division is Wednesday, March 1. The deadline for the Elementary Division is Monday, April 3. The date an application is complete is an important factor in determining course placement.

Cal Adventures

The Outdoor Youth Program offers fun and educational experiences for youth ages 8-17. The varied programs in Berkeley, the Northern California wilderness and beyond are an excellent setting for a young person to learn about the environment and build self-confidence while learning outdoor skills.

Dates and Times: Beginning of June through the end of August. Courses can be 3 hours to 3 weeks.

Age Range: 8-17 years old

Price/Financial Assistance: Prices vary depending on the activity. Cal Adventures offers full and partial scholarships for all its activities.

Registration Dates: Open-ended. Cal Adventures recommends registering as early in the summer season as possible.

Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area (SCRA)

Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports features arts and crafts, basketball, drama, fencing, hockey, lacrosse, nature studies, soccer, softball, swimming, tae kwon do, tennis and more.

Dates and Times: Spring Break and Summer Youth Programs. Full-day (9 am--4 pm) or half-day sessions and extended care are available.

Age Range: 3-15 years old

Price/Financial Assistance: Fees vary for all SCRA programs

Gold Camp

Dates and Times: Two-week sessions between June 19-July 14 and July 24-Aug. 18

Age Range: 12-15 years old

Specialty Camps

Program Description: One activity: archery, cheer leading, drama, fencing, golf, tennis and more.

Dates and Times: Half-day sessions July 17-21

Age Range: 4-15 years old

Lifeguard Training

Dates and Times: July 17-22

Age Range: 15+ years old

Final Tribute

One week of varied activities, full or half day, extended care available.

Lawrence Hall of Science

Lawrence Hall of Science offers five separate summer programs for children.

LHS Science Day Program

LHS offers half-day Science Day Camps with fun activities to explore everything from computers to chemistry to crime solving.

Age Range: 4-14 years old

LHS/SCRA Full-day Adventure Camps

LHS and Science and Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area team up to offer full-day, two-week programs in which campers spend half the day as science explorers and half the day as active athletes.

LHS offers three week-long residential camps in the Santa Cruz Mountains and Sierra Nevada that combine outdoor science explorations with swimming, hiking, stargazing, crafts and games.

LHS Summer Science Classes

LHS offers six sessions of summer classes that meet for an hour each day, over four, five or 10 days, featuring hands-on activities and classes on animals, astronomy, computers, art, bubbles and more.

Summer Fun at LHS

The university's hands-on science center is open daily, 10 am-5 pm, with interactive exhibits, daily planetarium shows, live animals to touch and observe in the LHS Biology Lab, do-it-yourself experiments in the Wizard's Lab and special family events each week.

Botanical Garden Summer Day Camp

The Botanical garden offers a summer day camp for five weekly sessions in July and August for the study of nature and related activities.

Dates and Times: The dates are not set yet, but will probably be as follows:

July 10-14, July 17-21,

July 31-Aug. 4, and Aug. 7-11.

5-7 years old 9 am-2 pm

8-11 years old 9 am-3 pm

Age Range: First, third and fifth sessions, 5-7 year olds. Second and fourth sessions, 8-11 year olds

Price/Financial Assistance: $125/week. There is a 20 percent discount for two or more children from the same

family in the same session.
