Charter Keynoter: Donna Shalala of Clinton Cabinet

Donna Shalala, U.S. secretary of Health and Human Services, will be keynote speaker for Charter Day at 2 p.m. Friday, April 28, in the Greek Theatre.

The entire campus community is invited to attend. No advance tickets will be required for the free event. The annual event celebrates the founding of the university 127 years ago and this year kicks off Cal Day, an all-day free campus open house Saturday, April 29.

Prior to joining the Clinton administration, Shalala was chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1988-93. She was also president of Hunter College in New York.

Charter Day will also feature the presentation of the Haas International Award to Sung-Joo Han, former foreign minister of Korea.

The award is made annually to an outstanding alumnus from a foreign country. Han received his PhD in political science in 1970.

Also honored will be Professor T.Y. Lin, California Alumni Association's Alumnus of the Year. Lin, a structural engineer, received his MS from Berkeley in 1933. The day will also mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations in San Francisco. A plaque commemorating the university's printing of the original UN charter will be presented by Glenn Seaborg on behalf of U.N. associations.
