New Berkeley Magazine Launched for Alumni

Some 130,000 alumni in the Bay Area are opening their mailboxes this week to find news of their alma mater in a new package--the Berkeley Magazine.

The prototype issue contains a sampling of news and articles about Berkeley and information designed to promote Friday's Charter Day and Saturday's Cal Day events.

The magazine resembles a scaled-down version of Sunday's San Francisco Examiner Magazine. Its 16 large pages cover next summer's revival of the ancient Greek games at the Nemea stadium uncovered by Professor Stephen Miller and colleagues, a poem by senior English major Amy Schroeder, profiles of five new Berkeley professors, an interview with new women's golf coach Nancy McDaniel and an essay on the Berkeley coffee scene.

Produced by writers, artists and editors of the Office of Public Affairs in University Relations, Berkeley Magazine is intended to evolve, based on reader feedback, into a low-cost periodical that can be sent to all Berkeley alumni. Many of them get no regular news of the university. An electronic version is available on the Internet (http://www.urel.berkeley.edu/magazine).
