Honored for Outstanding Management Ability

It was standing room only at Alumni House on May 9 as more than 200 faculty and staff gathered to honor this year's 25 recipients of the Berkeley Staff Assembly Excellence in Management Award.

Committee co-chair Trish Cascardi announced the recipients as Chancellor Tien and Kathryn Day-Huh presented the certificates.The emphasis for this year's awards was on career development.

This year's recipients promote staff development in a variety of ways.

Some managers dedicate departmental resources to staff development, others take advantage of the benefits of participatory management; other managers create opportunities for cross-training, often through formal and informal internships.

But despite the many methods employed, each of the managers demonstrates a genuine respect for and belief in Berkeley's staff and a belief that each staff member is able and eager to make a contribution to the campus.

One manager drew applause from the audience and her honored colleagues as she she emphasized the fact that Berkeley's staff is not part of the "equipment inventory," but rather a group of talented and dedicated individuals striving to maintain Berkeley's excellence.
