Rooms With a View

Faculty Clubs and Student Housing Are Convenient Accommodations for Summer Visitors

by Fernando Quintero

It's not the St. Francis, but a room at the Faculty Club is great for visiting scholars and alumni who want to stay in the heart of it all.

So are the compact but cheery rooms at the Women's Faculty Club.

Summer campus visitors are also welcome at 2424 Channing Way, the university's newest student housing complex.

For campus guests, affordable lodging and dining options on campus are plentiful.

The Faculty Club, designed by Bernard Maybeck and built in 1902, has 23 rooms including an executive suite with two queen beds, a living room, two fireplaces and a kitchenette. Other rooms have private or shared baths, and queen or twin beds. The rooms are sparsely furnished and a bit somber-looking, but new club manager Felix Solomon said changes are in store.

Solomon, who worked for 15 years as a manager for Hyatt and Sheraton hotels, said he plans to improve the appearance of the rooms and upgrade the quality of the food served at the club.

He has already asked the waiters to wear uniforms. And he has brought in a jazz duo to play during dinner on Thursday and Friday evenings.

Meals are served Monday through Friday. Campus staff are welcome for lunch and dinner. Cash or credit card only. Rooms can be reserved by a club member, a campus department, unit or alumni. Typical rates range from $48 to $82 a night. For reservations, call 642-1993 or 540-5678.

The Women's Faculty Club, designed and built by John Galen Howard in 1923, has 25 rooms with private baths and telephones. A communal kitchenette is located on each floor, and there is a small library for reading and relaxing. The rooms are bright and airy, with views of the surrounding greenery.

The dining room serves members and their guests only. Rooms can be booked by club members for visitors on official university business. Departments or units may also call for visiting lecturers and other guests. Rates range from $68 to $85 a night. For reservations, call 845-5084 or 642-4175.

The four-story residence hall at 2424 Channing Way has spacious rooms, a recreation room and a terraced courtyard. It is conveniently located less than two blocks from the central campus and close to Telegraph Avenue shopping.

Single and double occupancy rooms are available from June 1 through Aug. 14. The single occupancy rate is $38, $48 double.

For information or reservations, call Conference Services at 642-4444. After June 1, call Unit III Residence Hall at 642-5925.
