A $12.25 million expansion of the School of Law got under way this month, with the first steps focusing on the parking area, said Jeffrey Gee, director of design and project management.
The project, which is funded entirely through private gifts, will go through three phases, with completion due by summer's end 1996.
The first phase is construction of a four-story addition on the north side of Boalt Hall to house the Robbins Collection and an atrium with a reading room, two floors of faculty offices and underground parking.
The next step is conversion of Manville Hall, previously a residence hall for law students, into offices for faculty and student groups.
Finally, Boalt Hall itself will be renovated, said Gee. To minimize parking problems, work there is being done first. Between July 10 and the beginning of classes, portions of the lot will be open.
By Aug. 15, said Gee, there will be room for more than 100 cars by using attendant parking. The lot originally had 145 spaces.
The project's builder is Charles Pankow, Ltd.; architect is The Ratcliff Architects.
Meanwhile T-4, last of the temporary buildings constructed to accommodate the rush of students returning following World War II, is to be demolished at the end of July.
